Sharjah Art Foundation presents a retrospective exhibition of artist Amal Kenawy (1974 -2012). The exhibition brings together a full range of the artist’s works, from animation, painting, drawing, sketches and journals to video works, installations, performance documentation and archival material. Both well-known works such as Silence of the Sheep (2009) and some of her lesser-known early works, such as Frozen Memory (2002), are featured.

Kenawy explores political, social and feminist issues, primarily in Egypt, often reflecting on topics of death and regeneration. Heavily reliant on symbolism, her work alternates between a surrealist and an expressive approach, and she plays with single or multiple motifs to express her ideas. In several works, the tree appear as a symbol for the cycle of life; in other works her portrait appears as a symbol of universal feeling and experience.

Using the body as a site of violence, desire, memory and transcendence, Kenawy focuses on ways that human beings balance notions of memory and illusion against tangible and intangible dimensions of lived reality. Some of her works, such as The Purple Artificial Forest (2005), create unreal worlds that deprive domestic and intimate spaces of their security and comfort, while others, such as her video The Room (2004), survey the detachment between her physical existence, the surrounding world and her emotions.
