In vodou, artists are free to design flags, figures, and other ritual objects as they please. These artists, who are usually vodou practitioners, are often inspired by dreams, in which – like Vodou priests – they are visited by lwa and other beings. The liberty enjoyed by artists in depicting these spirits is part of the general freedom that Vodou practitioners have in interpreting the substance and appearance of lwa and the accompanying ceremonies. A number of images is shown here: magicians, Taino Indians, the lwa Erzulie Taureau, and a donkey on a chair. The spirits often represent protective guardians of families.
