Mirrors are found on most altars, yet they are seldom as large and imposing as those on display here. Mirrors are conduits through which houngan establish contact with the world of spirits. Some are baroque mirrors of European manufacture to which objects have been attached. Others were specially made for vodou rituals. The size and value of the mirrors shown here suggest that they were used by high-ranking, wealthy vodou practitioners.
