Three-part exhibition curated by Joanna Lee
Out of Magelang draws from Dr Oei Hong Djien's art museum collection for a survey of the historical and stylistic resonance of Yogyakarta as the leading centre of Indonesian art. Artists featured include S. Sudjojono, Hendra Gunawan, Widayat, Dadang Christanto, Made Djirna, Heri Dono, Edie Hara, Rudi Mantofani, Entang Wiharso, Nasirun and Jumaldi Alfi.
Entang Wiharso's I Am Black Goat and Nasirun's Wayang Zaman, Shadows of the Contemporary are solo exhibitions of recent installations and large-scale paintings. As contemporaries from Yogya, their works express personal attitudes and strategies towards negotiating the miasmic conditions of contemporary geopolitics and assert subjectivity and agency through traditional folk and popular culture.
