The Flying Saucer

The Flying Saucer, an iconic star-shaped building designed by Aly Noor El Din Nassar has continuously informed Sharjah’s cultural landscape since its opening in 1978. Situated at the intersection of Dasman, Ghubaibah, Yarmouk and Ramla, it was conceived as a one-stop shop combining a restaurant, French patisserie, delicatessen, newsstand, tobacconist and gift shop. While its radial symmetry and panoramic façade always evoked a futuristic ethos, the building’s original brutalist architecture was revealed following partial restorations in 2015, three years after the Foundation acquired it. Further renovations in 2018, which restored its original silhouette, led to a nomination for the prestigious Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2022.
