Khalid Bin Mohammed School currently houses The Africa Institute, a think tank and postgraduate institution established in 2018. The school is named after Sheikh Khalid Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, ruler of Sharjah from 1965 to 1972. Responding to an influx of new student enrolment compelled by the UAE’s education mandate in the 1970s, the Ministry of Education commissioned a series of school prototypes to meet the urgent expansion of the public school system. One of these prototypes, designed by Khatib & Alami, became the basis of the Khalid Bin Mohammed School and more than a dozen near-identical institutions across Sharjah, all of which feature classrooms organised in vaulted bays around a central courtyard.
