Bank Street Building

Stretching from the Corniche to Rolla Square Park, the wide boulevard popularly known as Bank Street bisects Sharjah’s historical centre, separating Al Mureijah and Al Shuwaiheen. On this boulevard are 17 high-rise blocks. Designed by Técnica y Proyectos, these modernist buildings, completed in 1977, provided housing to newly arrived expatriates, office space to businesses and ground floor storefronts to major banks. The future of Bank Street is uncertain now as many of the buildings are slated for demolition as part of a new masterplan, which intends to restore the historic ethos of the premodern cityscape. This year’s Biennial has adapted on one of the buildings as a venue.
