Bait Al Serkal

Once the personal residence of Issa Bin Abdul Latif Al Serkal, the British Commissioner for the Arabian Gulf, and later home to members of the ruling Al Qasimi family, Bait Al Serkal dates to the nineteenth century. Converted into Sharjah’s first maternity hospital in the early 1960s, it was restored and transformed into an arts and cultural centre in the mid-1990s. The new construction was part of a broader government effort to preserve a constellation of heritage houses in the Al Shuwaiheen neighbourhood, a focal point of the local art scene. The three-storey building is now used as a core Biennial venue and event space for a range of the Foundation’s programming.
