Al Mureijah Square

Extending from Al Zahra Mosque to the reconstructed walls of the old city, Al Mureijah historical quarter dates back to the nineteenth century. Inhabited until the 1960s, the once residential neighbourhood was composed of clusters of courtyard homes stitched together by narrow alleys. As part of the Foundation’s philosophy of adaptive reuse, five of these houses were activated as art and community spaces in 2013. Today, the neighbourhood includes a mixture of spaces including white cube galleries, heritage homes and an outdoor venue for film screenings, Mirage City Cinema.
