Mujawara / The Tree School. 2014-ongoing
Carob tree, iron, earth, chairs and books
A place where people can gather for communal learning. The living Carob tree – with its own characteristics and history – is the device that creates a physical and metaphorical common territory where ideas and actions can emerge through critical, free and independent discussion among participants. For many, knowledge is mainly based on information and skills, but The Tree School emphasizes a process of learning that cuts across conventional disciplines, welcoming marginalized forms of knowledge outside of traditional academic learning.
This project was first established in Bahia, southern Brazil, together with the art collective Contrafilé for the 31st São Paulo Biennale (2014).
