Amal Kenawy
1974 - 2012 Cairo, Egypt.
Non-Stop Conversation. 2007
Performance at Bait Al Ansari, one of the oldest houses in Al Mureijah, as evidenced by the uncut coral stones used as building material, and its unusual timber windtower.
About the work
The performance commissioned for Sharjah Biennial 8 questioned the effects of modernisation on traditional architecture and human emotion. This site-specific installation and performance took place in a ruined traditional building amidst the overlapping sounds of machinery, which grew closer and closer in time until they occurred simultaneously. In her performance, Kenawy covered the remaining standing structure with a handmade quilt, which both beautified a structure long abandoned and neglected and forced it into recognition with its new pink ‘clothes’.
