In their phase as an artist duo, Ulrich Kubiak and Ludwig Rauch experimented with "specially developed layering and montage processes that initially allowed unlimited variability in the development of motifs," wrote Michael Freitag. "At the same time, however, the photographic source material could be transformed into a form of light painting, the depth effect of which could not have been achieved with conventional techniques of image making."
