Collective Independent Exhibition. The third edition of the event with 23 participating Algerian artists, runs from 23 April - 21 May 2016 at Marché Volta, a disused market in Algiers.
Apr 2016Picturie Générale in Algiers is back for its third edition from April 23rd to May 21st 2016. On this occasion, the collective exhibition will bring together 23 Algerian artists (local and from the diaspora) who will reclaim the disused building of the Marché Volta. This space is temporarily occupied and hosts the multidisciplinary artworks of artists from the current Algerian scene.
Located in the heart of the capital, the choice of this old atypical building from 1989 shows the free spirit and independence of the group that is tied neither to a space nor to a date. Investing all realms of their reality, the artists also divert public and private spaces from their initial function.
The market will host a PLURAL exhibition with photography, installations, videos, projections, paintings, etc., in the same way a display of purchasable goods would, encouraging the visitor to stroll and experience a sensorial experience.
Picturie Générale, that translates into "Mawad Fannya 3amma" in Arabic, is a mix between "picture" and "épicerie" (grocery). The name of the exhibition comes from the designation alimentation générale (general food store), a word play that aims "to poke fun at the very action of exhibiting art." The emergence of an art market in its fetal stage and a lack of public infrastructures encourage the artists to self-produce and help each other in order to promote their work within independent and collaborative events. Picturie Générale illustrates one of these alternatives to the established system.
The participating artists are part of different communities, associations, and networks (Box 24, Annabaartscene, 213W, Collectif 220, nu-mi-die, etc.) favoring the cultural regeneration in operation.
Conscious of the socio-cultural stakes, the 23 participants establish a link between an abundant expression and their contemporary reality. Their works participate in the dialogue between local particularities and the perception of a current globalized culture. The space invites the wanderer to take part in the critique and (re)location of art on the public stage. The exhibition will be punctuated by events that aim to bring together the audience with artistic creation.
