(Detail)
The custom of taxidermy is a western tradition, using "wild" animals as trophies for back home and as evidence of man’s successful mastery over animals. In contrast, the makers of African masks are not concerned with faithful portrayals of natural creatures. Instead, they seek to channel a leopard’s power and speed, a monkey’s guile or a falcon’s sharp eyesight into the body of the man that wears it and animates it. Once again, the two approaches – western-influenced and African, past and present – stand in diametrical contrast to each other, suggesting different strategies with which mankind can relate to the world around it.
