Works by 5 artists from the Mathaf's collection in Doha, Qatar: Fahrelnissa Zeid, Jewad Selim, Saliba Douaihy, Salim Al-Dabbagh, Ahmed Cherkaoui. 17 Nov. 2012 - 1 June 2013.Dec 2012
With Forever Now: Five Anecdotes from the Permanent Collection, Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art (inaugurated in 2010 in Doha, Qatar) presents for the second time a selection of highlights from its extensive collection of more than 6,000 works from the 1840s to the present.
The exhibition features 57 works by five artists: Fahrelnissa Zeid, Jewad Selim, Saliba Douaihy, Salim Al-Dabbagh, and Ahmed Cherkaoui. By presenting their work with supporting archives and resources, it explores how the artists’ environments, histories and cultures inform their expression of belonging and their changing modern realities.
"This is a great opportunity to continue the exploration of modern art from the Arab world that begun with the inception of Mathaf," stated Mathaf’s founder H.E. Sheikh Hassan bin Mohammed bin Ali Al Thani.
The five selected artists are from varied backgrounds, countries and generations. Each presents a unique process of artistic development and negotiation, but are united through process, heritage, geography and aspiration, navigating comfortably and confidently through different and disparate sources. Aside from the individual achievement, each of the artists contributed to the making of a regional movement in modern art.
Forever Now contextualizes the formal, personal, and historical references found in their work, exploring possibilities for new narratives that allow further understanding of the history of modern Arab art. An exhibition catalogue, with new writings and archival material edited by Dr. Nada Shabout, accompanies the exhibition and provides new perspectives on the collection.
