Knowledge Setback. 2015
Intervention at the Biblioteca Pública Piloto
Arias has dealt with the political connotations of subjective issues like sexuality and religion. His work for MDE15 focuses on the public sphere to adress the risk of losing direction in the processes of urban transformation when the idea of knowledge as an engine for change gets weaker and continent dominates content, and form prevails over the actual pursuit of knowledge. His project highlights an unprecedented use of newspaper libraries in Colombia: the video records the action of turning over the books on the shelves of the public library Biblioteca Pública Piloto and this image is accompanied by the sound of murmurs coming from visitors and librarians. Those murmurs are the whispers of victims of the conflict who look for press images about the events in which they lost their loved ones; images that will be useful as official evidence to testify before the Colombian state.
