New Horizons. 2014
Acrylic on canvas
(The work belongs to the chapter Local stories in the global context.)
Much of Zapata’s work provides documentary evidence of the life of a downtown area of Medellín known as Barbacoas. It is a place associated with prostitution, drugs and danger. There are many places like this in cities around the world. They reflect the government policies, the priorities and complicity of those in power. However, Zapata does not enter into political discourse, he simply captures what he sees every day in the street, in the in bars and in the hotels in order to portray the human beings who inhabit the city. We can see what we don’t want to see through a compassionate lens.
