From October 2011 on, Okwui Enwezor will be the Director of Haus der Kunst in Munich. Enwezor's projects in UiU since 1997.
Jan 2011On 19th of January 2011, Haus der Kunst in Munich announced the appointment of Okwui Enwezor as its new Director, starting in October 2011. Enwezor is successor of Chris Dercon, who will take over as director of the Tate Modern in London this year.
Enwezor (born 1963 in Kalaba, Nigeria) is currently Adjunct Curator at the International Center of Photography, New York, as well as Joanne Cassulo Fellow of the Independent Study Program at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. He was Dean of Academic Affairs, San Francisco Art Institute, and visiting Professor in Art History at the University of Pittsburgh, Columbia University, and University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
He became internationally known in particular as Artistic Director of mayor international exhibitions, including: 2nd Johannesburg Biennale (1997), The Short Century (2001 - 2002), Documenta 11 (2002), 2nd Sevilla Biennial (2006), 7th Gwangju Biennial (2008).
In 1994, Enwezor founded the magazine, "NKA: Journal of Contemporary African Art", which he continues editing together with Salah Hassan (Cornell University) and Chika Okeke-Agulu (Princeton University).
Okwui Enwezor is Artistic Director of "Meeting Points 6", this year's edition of the multidisciplinary project, that will start in April 2011 in Beirut, continue in Cairo, Tanger, Tunis, Amman, Damascus, Ramallah, Brussels, and end up in February 2012 in Berlin. Meeting Points is a series of events organized by the Young Arab Theatre Fund since 2004 in cooperation with changing partners, that aims to create connections and interactions among young artists from the Middle East and North Africa.
