Beyoğlu is a district of Istanbul, located on the European side, separated from the Old City by the Golden Horn. During the Middle Ages it was known as Pera ("across" in Greek). It extends from Karaköy (Galata) and the Galata Bridge to Taksim Square. It is usually considered the “city center” of Istanbul. İstiklal Caddesi is Istanbul's prominent pedestrian street, filled with strollers at anytime of the day.

Most of the venues of the 14th Istanbul Biennial are located in Beyoğlu - see the list of all the 36 venues.
