Curatorial Team - Biographies

Director: Nikolaus Hirsch

Nikolaus Hirsch is a Frankfurt-based architect, and director of Stadelschule and Portikus. Previously he has held academic positions at the Architectural Association in London, the Institute for Applied Theatre Studies at Gießen University and the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. His work includes the award-winning Dresden Synagogue, Bockenheimer Depot Theater (with William Forsythe), unitednationsplaza (with Anton Vidokle), European Kunsthalle, the Cybermohalla Hub in Delhi, and numerous exhibition structures such as Bruno Latour´s ‘Making Things Public’ (ZKM, 2005) and ‘Indian Highway’(Serpentine Gallery, 2008). Hirsch has curated ‘ErsatzStadt: Representations of the Urban’ at Volksbuhne Berlin, ‘Cultural Agencies’ in Istanbul and a number of exhibitions at Portikus such as Julieta Aranda´s and Anton Vidokle´s ‘Time/Bank’. He is the author of the books, On Boundaries, Track 17, and Institution Building.

Curator: Eui Young Chun

Eui Young Chun is a Seoul-based architect and professor at the Graduate School of Architecture at Kyonggi University. He completed his PhD at Seoul National University in 1999 and is a graduate of the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. His work includes the remodeling of L-view Building in Seoul (2000), the Kwon hospital in Suwon-City (2002), the headquarters for Noblesse in Seoul (2004), 'K' Publishing in Paju (2005), and the Kyonggi University Graduate School of Architecture Building (2011). Chun also led the Seoul Design Olympiad in 2009 as Director General.

Curator: Philipp Misselwitz

Philipp Misselwitz is an architect, urban researcher and curator based near Strasbourg/ France and Berlin. He is currently holding the Chair of International Urbanism at the Institute of Urban Planning of the University of Stuttgart. Philipp Misselwitz was educated at Cambridge University (Bachelor of Architecture, 1996) and the Architecture Association London (AA Diploma, 2001) and received a PhD in architecture and urbanism at Stuttgart University (2009). Previous teaching commitments include London Metropolitan University, Architecture Association School of Architecture and University of the Arts Berlin. He is a founding member of the Berlin based architectural research group 'urban catalyst' - a platform for research activities, exhibitions, publications and debates. Since 2005, he has worked as a researcher at Stuttgart University’s Urban Planning Institute where he initiated and led the "Camp Development Pilot Research Project" - a United Nation commissioned research and planning project promoting participatory planning processes in urbanized refugee camps in the Near East (2006-2008). He initiated and now directs the international post-graduate Double Degree Master Programme "Integrated Urbanism and Sustainable Design" in partnership with Ain Shams University Cairo. He has worked as a consultant, project coordinator, researcher and curator for a number of German and international organizations including German Development Cooperation (GIZ), United Nations, Bundeskulturstiftung, Goethe Institute, Robert Bosch Foundation and Allianz Kulturstiftung in Germany, United Kingdom, Turkey, Syria, Jordan, West Bank. His most recent exhibition "Space, Time, Dignity, Rights" opened in May 2012 in the German Architecture Centre Berlin (DAZ) which will continue to travel to the World Urban Forum in Naples in September 2012. His curatorial work (with Can Altay) also includes "Refuge" (2009) commissioned by the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (2009), "Open City Istanbul" (2010) commissioned by Istanbul European Cultural Capital 2010, which continued to travel to Amman (Jordan) and Cairo (Egypt). He initiated (with Can Altay) and led the international research collaboration "diwan" (2009-2010) including academic partners in Istanbul, Beirut, Amman and Cairo funded by the Prince Claus Fund for Culture and Development. Other curatorial work includes "Cultural Agencies" (2008-2010, with Nikolaus Hirsch) in Istanbul, "City of Collision" (2006-2008, with Tim Rieniets), "Liminal Spaces" (2005-2007, with Galit Eilat and Reem Fadda), "Models for Tomorrow" (2007, with Nikolaus Hirsch) and others.
