The Canal Grande is the main transport artery of Venice, and the city's "grand boulevard". The many magnificent palaces lining its shores are an evidence of the former wealth and power of the eminent Patrician families. Today, several of these buildings house museums or foundations. Others are rented for temporary exhibitions, especially during the international art and architecture shows of the Venice Biennale.
A tour along the Canal Grande is best undertaken on a vaporetto (waterbus). On our photographic tour in five stages we show first and foremost the art museums and other art venues, including some of the palazzi used as exhibition spaces.
This first part begins at the Ponte della Costituzione (Constitution Bridge) that connects Piazzale Roma with the Santa Lucia train station. It was designed by Santiago Calatrava (* 1951, Spain), and set up at the place in 2007. It continues via San Geremia to the San Stae church.
