Between 1563 and 1565 the vault of the staircase was richly ornamented with stuccoes and painted figures by Federico Zuccari. Its magnificence competes with the Scala d’oro of Palazzo Ducale and that of the Biblioteca Marciana.
The painted decoration representing religious allegories is framed by "grottesche" (fantastic human and animal figures) and floral arabesques. The stuccoes represent various sea creatures, and are inspired by ancient gems and cameos of the family collection.
