As the seat of all government and judiciary functions within the Republic, the Doge’s Palace also housed prisons. In the mid-16th century it was decided to build a new structure, the Palazzo delle Prigioni, on the other side of the canal to house the prisons and the chambers of the magistrates.
While the access to the prisons and the Bridge of Sighs is from the Doge’s Palace, the Palazzo delle Prigioni can be visited from the promenade Riva degli Schiavoni.
