In the 1930s, the architect Tomaso Buzzi (Sondrio, 1900 - Rapallo, 1981) was asked to redesign the interiors of the Cini residence.
One of Buzzi’s most significant contributions to the Palazzo Cini is a striking oval spiral staircase, with its explicit allusions to illustrious models, such as the Scala Regia in the Palazzo Farnese at Caprarola del Vignola, Andrea Palladio's oval spiral staircase in the convent of Santa Maria della Carità (Accademia), Venice, and Francesco Borromini’s "Helicoidal Staircase" in Palazzo Barberini, Rome.
