The Presentation of Christ in the Temple
Oil on panel, ca. 1469
It was not until 1916 that the painting was attributed to Giovanni Bellini, until then it was considered to be a work by Mantegna, probably from the 18th century, among other things because of a forged inscription on the reverse. There are strong similarities of the composition with Andrea Mantegna's "The Presentation of Christ in the Temple" (1454-1455) in the Berlin Gemäldegalerie.
Various identifications have been proposed for the figures: Giovanni and Andrea Mantegna to the right; Nicolosia Bellini and the mother of the artist, Anna Bellini, to the left; and perhaps Jacopo Bellini in the figure of Saint Joseph or in that of the High Priest.
