The outer wall of the raised vaulted niche is decorated with a painting on stucco imitating a wall of ashlar stones.
From 2006 to 2010, the wall paintings were restored by experts from the Courtauld Institute in London on behalf of the Petra National Trust (PNT) with funding from the German Gerda Henkel Foundation. They could hardly be seen under a thick layer of soot and were damaged by engraved graffiti.
The niche with the mural paintings had to be protected by a grid from the subsequent increase of visitors.
