Jabal al-Khubtha

Jabal al-Khubtha

One of the most unusual and mind-blowing views of the Treasury is from the vantage point of Jabal al-Khubtha, high above the Khazneh, especially during early morning, the only time when the monument gets some sunlight.

The forty-minute hike is strenuous but highly recommended, on a trail that is steep but not difficult, mostly on wide and secured steps, which start 150 meters left from the Palace Tomb. Half way up you are already rewarded with fantastic panoramic views of the Theatre and of the whole center of the city, where you can easily recognize the Colonnaded Street, the Great Temple and Qasr al-Bint, and even the rock-cut urn atop the Monastery at the end of the trail between the two mountains in the background.

When you think you've reached the summit of Jabal al-Khubtha but don't yet see the Khazneh, turn left descending a bit, and you will make out the colorful tent of a Bedouin family, signposted "Treasury's Best View," where you can sit on carpets, have a relaxing tea with them, enjoying the scenery, watching the Khazneh at your feet and the waves of tourists pouring out of the Siq and staying just 15 minutes for a "selfie" before turning back.

The informative photo tours introduce the highlights of ancient Petra, show hidden details and recommend lesser known routes.
