Mosaic from the presbyterium of the upper church, 6th century.
The ruins at Massuh, 3 km east of Hesban and 10 km north of Madaba, were in the territory of the ancient diocese of Esbus. Excavations in the southeast sector revealed a church that was two superimposed edifices, each with its own mosaic floor.
In the apse, only the northern side of the mosaic is preserved. It is composed on two parts: a scene with two lions facing a medallion with inscription dated to the beginning of the 6th century. The acanthus scrolls of the border, added later in the century, contain a dog pursuing a hare; a duck; two partridges facing a flower; a rooster; and a bovine animal.
