In Iraq Al-Amir, right opposite to the ‘Caves of the Prince’ is the entrance to the Handicrafts Village & Women’s Cooperative Association. The project, launched in the early 1990s by the Noor al-Hussein Foundation and the Wadi Al-Seer Community Development, trains craft skills of local women and girls, to develop income-generating opportunites.
Ten historical houses, renovated preserving its unique architectural heritage, host several handicraft workshops where the women make and sell ceramics, weavings and embroideries, clear soap and chemicals-free paper products, as well as home-made food.
The Handicrafts Village also has a large shaded terrace for gatherings, as well as a Knowledge Station with computers, printer, and internet access for the community.
The journey proposed in this tour can end with a wonderful traditional meal on the terrace, which has to be ordered in advance at the Women’s Cooperative (see the contact below).
