The restored section under the Acropolis, which can be visited during guided tours, was part of a 170 km long water supply system with the longest tunnel of antiquity.

In order to measure the course and depth of the tunnel and to be able to carve it out of the rock from several points at the same time, construction shafts with stairs were laid out at a distance of about 35 m. These were used to transport the rock upwards and ensure the air supply.
When the tunnel was finished, the construction shafts were bricked up to protect the water and filled in from the outside so that they were difficult to locate.
