The Umayyad palace from the mid 8th cent., close to Amman's airport, is world-famous for its carved ornamentation. Remains can be seen on the site, extensively restored in 2013.

In addition to the ceremonial staterooms, living quarters for the caliph and his immediate entourage were arranged to the north of the audience hall and at its sides. Each of these apartments has a large central chamber and two side chambers each to the right and the left. They were barrel-vaulted and ventilated through concealed air ducts.
