The black basalt fort built by the Romans and used by Umayyads, Ayyubids, and Ottomans, was the headquarters of T. E. Lawrence and Sharif Hussein Bin Ali during the Arab Revolt.

In this tower T. E. Lawrence had his room overlooking the entry. He wrote about this experience in Qasr al-Azraq in his famous autobiographical account Seven Pillars of Wisdom.
