The house, considered on of the most spectacular merchant houses in As-Salt, was built by Abdel Rahman al Aqrouq for Yusef Sukkar, a member of a prominent Christian family who moved from Nablus to As-Salt. They were well-known for the development of a commercial and administrative center facing the main square (not in existence anymore).
The Sukkar House (1879-1884) is a multi-storey building on the slope of Al-Jada'a. The upper floors have projecting verandas on I-beams with magnificent views of the city below.
While the main entrance is a shared public space in front, it has also a rear entrance and exterior staircase descending from the upper Said Al-Bahra Street.
The interior was embellished with glass and floor tiles imported from Jerusalem, and decorated with painted ceilings and elaborate wood balustrades.
