Roman period (early 2nd century AD)
Samaria-Sabaste near Nablus on the West Bank
Apollo was the god of music, light, truth and healing in Graeco-Roman mythology, but this statue was found in a temple dedicated to Kore, the goddess of the underworld and vegetation. The back of the statue is not polished, which indicates that it was placed in a niche within the temple.
This type of Apollo was derived from a 4th century BC work by the Athenian sculptor Praxiteles. Copies of his work became popular in the 2nd century AD.
