723 AD, Umayyad palace Qasr Al Muwaqqar, southeast of Amman.
Limestone; height 60 cm, width 41 cm
One of 18 capitals standing inside a water reservoir at the palace of Al Muwaqqar, an official residence of Umayyad Caliph Yazid II (687 - 724). The capital with acanthus leaves crowned a column with cubit measurement indications on which the water level could be read. The last measurement indication appears in small letters on the capital above the lower two lines of the inscription: Khamsat Ashara dhira = 15 cubits (see the detail).
