Early Christians used the sign of the fish to recognize churches and other believers because they were persecuted by the Roman Empire. The sign of the fish refers to the Greek "Iesous Christos, Theou Yios, Soter", what means "Jesus Christ, Son of God, Saviour". The meaning of the first letters I-CH-TH-Y-S is "fish".
