Museo Nacional de Colombia

Carrera 7 #28-66
Bogotá
Colombia

Established in 1823, the National Museum of Colombia is hosted since 1948 in the former Central penitentiary, known as the Panóptico. Today, it holds a collection of more than 20,000 objects that are symbols of national history and heritage. The collections include remains of the first inhabitants and material culture of pre-Hispanic societies, objects from current indigenous and Afro-Colombian ethnography, evidence of different periods of the nation's history, and works of artistical value that range from the colonial period through the 20th century, including works by: Fernando Botero, Alejandro Obregón, Guillermo Wiedemann, Juan Antonio Roda, Eduardo Ramírez Villamizar, Edgar Negret and Enrique Grau.

The Museum offers 17 permanent exhibition galleries with more than 2,500 pieces currently on display, a calendar of temporary exhibitions that allows its visitors to be in touch with important national and international displays of history, art and archaeology, and a varied educational and cultural program.

Modernities

The Modernities hall proposes a journey through different artistic compositions developed and disseminated in Colombia during the second half of the 20th century. Through the exhibited works, produced by artists of different generations, the most particular and diverse aspects that enrich the national artistic experience can be appreciated, which forces us to speak of this period in the plural. Modernities refers to the multiplicity of searches that characterize Colombian visual arts, marked by political and religious events plus a whole series of technological innovations. To this, one has to add social phenomena like the forced and voluntary migration of thousands of peasants to the cities and the repercussion of international events during the Cold War. In this hall, the visitor will be able to appreciate the pictorial and sculptural work of some of the most important artists in the country, as well as enjoy spaces devoted to cinema, literature and television.
