Curator of Projects: José Roca

The Aesthetic Use of the Object

The exhibition The Aesthetic Use of the Object, curated by José Roca specially for the Projects section of ARTBO 2014, brought together projects by artists and designers related to design and applied arts. Some of them invoked the graphic design tradition to make wall interventions with geometrical paintings, as in Peter Halley’s and Jaime Gili’s case, whilst Jaime Franco created a mural of architectural figures using mud as his primary material and taking advantage of technological elements such as 3D projections. Others, like Nicolás Consuegra and Héctor Zamora, produced works around the legacy of modern architecture. Also moving in this ambiguous area between architecture and design was Daniel Acosta’s work. In Sebastián Errázuriz’s and Atelier van Lieshout’s pieces, a very peculiar approach to design stood out, in which functional furniture and objects acquired an iconic character becoming surprising, mutable sculptures. Los Carpinteros’ installation was located in the line of the absurd. Meanwhile, Mathieu Mercier reused simple objects and materials, both industrial and domestic, to achieve objects of great formal elegance. José Olano also used everyday objects to build fragile and tension driven installations.

The textile, as a traditional material used in applied arts, was also present in this selection through Ximena Garrido-Lecca’s and Ana Laura Aláez’s works. Ceramic was used in the works of Jorge Pardo, one of the paradigmatic artists of this relationship between art and design, who is acknowledged for his beautiful lamps in diverse materials that are placed in an intermediate and ambiguous space between a utilitarian object and sculpture.
