The Río Calchaquí has its source at the mountain Nevado de Acay (5950 m high) and flows from north to south through the Valles Calchaquíes. Here, where it joins the Río Santa María to form the Río de las Conchas (bottom right in the picture), begins the quebrada (gorge) of the same name.
From the locality of Alemanía on, the Río de las Conchas is called Río Guachipas. The river is dammed in the Embalse Cabra Corral and then continues to flow as the Río Juramento, merging into the Río Salado, which flows into the Río Paraná after a total length of over 2,200 km.
