Tsunan stretches to the very south of Niigata prefecture, with the Naeba mountain (2,145 m) located on the border of Niigata and Nagano. Despite the heavy snow in winter people can enjoy cool and dry summers. Its topography and weather make it possible to grow rice, flowers and plants, carrots, asparagus, sweet corn.

There are numerous ruins from the Jomon era (12,000 BC - 300 BC). The Okinohara ruins, located along the Nakatsu river terrace were designated a national historic site in 1978. It is estimated that the village was built in a circle of 120 meters diameter with a central square, and more than 200 houses. Kaen-gata earthenware vessels, stone tools, arms, and other artefacts can be seen at the Tsunan History and Folklore museum.

Since the first edition in the year 2000, the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale has produced more than 380 artworks, 29 of them in Tsunan.
