Off the main sites, dOCUMENTA (13) takes place in a variety of in-between spaces in Kassel's city center that are connected through a non-linear narration. They are a "Third Space" - a series of places between viewers and stage, each a combination of physical and psychological characteristics.
These "bourgeois spaces" are places of entertainment created in the post-World War II era, like ballrooms, cinemas, domestic spaces, spaces of daily commerce, and office spaces. Neither utopian nor dystopian, they have many stories, textures, and connotations. Each space opens up a period in time and a set of associations. They are also places in transition, often empty today. Some of them used to represent Kassel before World War II but also recall the postwar period of reconstruction. They are often unused today, forgotten, and decaying.
