THE DISTANCE OF THE LOUDEST YELL explores the Zionist mythology of ‘making the desert bloom’ and the strategic policy of forestation projects, namely the planting of pine trees and eucalyptus forests across Palestine as instruments of concealment. Aside from producing a more familiar, white settler-colonial landscape, pines were chosen because of their quick growth, concealing previously destroyed villages while destroying smaller plants as a result of their acidity, ultimately rendering the land unusable for cultivation. These pine forests have been planted since 1901 by the Jewish National Fund. The largest is the Yatir Forest, situated in the Naqab desert on confiscated Bedouin land. The Hippocrepis Unisiquilosa plant is most commonly found in these areas.
Taking place in a family home in al-Sireh and on site at al-Araqib—both unrecognised Bedouin villages in the northern Naqab—the film sets out to uncover the ideologies and practices of conquest and domination haunting the landscape by capturing daily rituals of communal survival.
