Biografie

Named, 2018
Stickerei (Baumwollstoff und Faden)

Named replicates several human figurines displayed in situ. They are chosen by the artist because they have no clear gender. After outlining their body shapes with black thread, she also embroiders a fictional name with no clear gender on the back of the tissue. With this action, the artist questions the way scientists, anthropologists and historians explain the past, drawing attention to the ideological constructions behind such narratives.

Women Awake, 2018
Stickerei (Baumwollstoff und Faden)

Women Awake represents the floor plan of the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum in Paola, creating a labyrinthine pattern wherein the artist symbolically seeks to awaken a meditative journey of self-knowledge. Embroidered in gold, a small shape appears in one of the spaces. It marks the exact place where the figurine of the Sleeping Lady was found. The artist refers to how the new consciousness and awakening that women can provide is needed for our existential and political journey.

Nationalmuseum für Archäologie

The National Museum of Archaeology is housed in the Auberge de Provence. The building, an example of fine Baroque architecture, was erected in 1571 following a plan by local architect Ġilormu Cassar to house the Knights of the Order of St John.

The Museum exhibits an extraordinary range of artefacts dating back to Malta’s Neolithic period (5000 BC) up to the Phoenician Period (400 BC). Highlights include the ‘Sleeping Lady’ (from the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum), the ‘Venus of Malta’ (from Ħaġar Qim), bronze daggers (recovered from the Bronze Age layers at Tarxien Temples), the Horus & Anubis pendant and the anthropomorphic sarcophagus, both belonging to the Phoenician Period.

The Museum provides the visitor with a good introduction to the prehistory and early history of the Maltese Island and acts as a catalyst to the other archaeological sites in Malta.
