Estado Oculto [Okkultes Stadium]

Ausstellung kuratiert von Rodrigo Moura im Dialog mit Paulo Maia als integraler Bestandteil des 43SNA.

Conceived as an integral part of the 43 Salón (inter) Nacional de Artistas, Estado Oculto aims to represent the place of traditional knowledge in today's artistic production in a group show that puts in dialogue objects from different sources: contemporary artists dealing with the heritage of traditional societies and the indigenous in their work; new indigenous artists and filmmakers; works by indigenistas, or people who have studied and lived among Amerindians; original artifacts by traditional societies or objects that pretend to be so; objects that owe their existence to mistakes related to traditional cultures . The exhibition aims at examining this complex web of meanings, interests and co-existences, by approximating the indigenous art to contemporary practice in their shared idea of bridging visuality and concept, abstraction and figuration, past and present, static and moveable, indigenous and miscible.

The point of departure for the show is the collection of the Alzate Ceramics, now owned by the Antioquia University, a famous case of artistic forgery dating back to the 19th century in which a group of local artisans created a new form of ceramics, supposedly from pre-Columbian civilizations. The title of the show is taken from the lyric of a song by Brazilian singer-songwriter Caetano Veloso titled "Um Índio," but it also refers to the different states of meaning and symbolism that objects can hold, in a hidden away – at least for those who can't see.
