In film, photography and installation, Amina Menia considers issues of public space, the cityscape and urban policies. Enclosed looks at the unusual history of a monument in the heart of Algiers. Monument to the Dead, by Paul Landowski, was commissioned by French authorities in 1922 to commemorate both French and Arab soldiers who died in World War I. In the late 1970s, the mayor of Algiers appointed artist M’hamed Issiakhem to "do something" with this remnant of colonialism. He decided to enclose it in a sort of sarcophagus. A few months ago, a crack appeared in this "double monument", sparking a debate between those who want to keep the outer sarcophagus and those who want to remove it. In this work, Menia has tried to highlight unseen details and create connections in an open-ended presentation.
