In 1988, the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Justice issued a circular that would come into force on August 1. This circular brought a series of restrictions to prisons such as the compulsory wearing of uniforms, a reduction of the period prisoners were allowed to spend in the common area, the use of only Turkish during visits, and the imposition of inspection on communication by letter and telegraph. The “August 1 Circular” that signalled a transition to a system of isolation and led to nationwide protests, also has an important place for its impact on the women’s movement. A call for support for hunger strikes, initiated in prisons, by a feminist group referred to by the press as the “Women in Black,” broadened the movement’s field of struggle.
