Gründungsdirektor Yongwoo Lee

Yongwoo Lee is a writer, curator and art historian based in Seoul. He is currently the president of Gwangju Biennale Foundation, a position he has held since 2008.

A former professor of art history and critical theory at Korea University, Lee has lectured at many different colleges across the States and in Europe. He obtained his Ph.D in art history at Oxford University. He has been the editor of the critical art journal NOON since 2009.

Lee was the founding director of Gwangju Biennale, which opened in 1995 with the theme Beyond the Borders, and attracted 1.63 million spectators. He was invited to return as the Gwangju Biennale's Artistic Director of 2004 for the biennial's 10th anniversary. Lee was the executive director for Centre for New Media Art New York. He has curated exhibitions such as The Flower of May (Gwangju Museum of Art 2010), Nam June Paik Retrospective (National Museum of Contemporary Art 1993), and Tigers Tail (Venice Biennale 1995), among others.

His published books include: Information and Reality (Fruitmarket Gallery Edinburgh), Nam June Paik (Samsung Publication), and Origins of Video Art (Munye Madang).
