Chronotopia. 2013
Video- und Soundinstallation
Bernd Behr's video and sound installation Chronotopia investigates the idea of an abandoned future through the modes of research and fiction. He creates an arena for the audience to reenact concepts of historiography in thinking through how history is constructed, narrated, projected, and forgotten. His staged fiction and performance draws together three groups of Taiwanese historical materials from the 20th century—the story of Attun Palalin Teruo Nakamura Lee Guang-Hui, the last soldier to surrender in World War II, who was sent by the Japanese army to Indonesia, where he survived alone in the jungle for 30 years before being brought back to civilization in 1974; ruined and maintained Futuro houses in Wanli and downtown Taipei; and the ever-evolving culture of Taiwanese bianshi, which began as silent film commentator—all of which are deconstructed and interwoven. Perhaps these historical materials do not reflect enough objective truth, but in experiencing the restraints of our artificial environment the audience gains both an opportunity to contemplate history and the attendant possibility to reinvent present narratives and lives.
