Die 54. Internationale Kunstausstellung mit dem Titel ILLUMInazioni – ILLUMInations wird von Bice Curiger geleitet und von der Biennale di Venezia unter der Präsidentschaft von Paolo Baratta organisiert.

Die Ausstellung ILLUMInazioni – ILLUMInations mit Arbeiten von 82 Künstlern und Gruppen aus aller Welt ist im Zentralen Pavillon in den Giardini und im Arsenale zu sehen. Bice Curiger bat vier teilnehmende Künstler, "parapavilions" zu schaffen - architektonische und skulpturale Strukturen in den Giardini und im Arsenale, die Werke anderer Künstler beherbergen.

"La Biennale is one of the world’s most important forums for the dissemination and 'illumination' about the current developments in international art. The title of the 54th Exhibition, ILLUMInations literally draws attention to the importance of such developments in a globalised world. I am particularly interested in the eagerness of many contemporary artists to establish an intense dialogue with the viewer, and to challenge the conventions through which contemporary art is viewed."

"ILLUMInations emphasizes the intuitive insight and the illumination of thought that is fostered by an encounter with art and its ability to sharpen the tools of perception – the director underlined. While the last Biennale ‘Making Worlds’ highlighted constructive creativity, ILLUMInations will focus on the 'light' of the illuminating experience, on the epiphanies that come with intercommunicative, intellectual comprehension. The Age of Enlightenment also resonates in ILLUMInations, testifying to the enduring vibrancy of its legacy".

Bice Curiger ist Kunsthistorikerin, Kritikerin und Kuratorin internationaler Ausstellungen. Ihre kuratoriale Aktivität am Kunsthaus Zürich findet eine Entsprechung in ihrer wichtigen Arbeit im Verlagsbereich. 1984 war sie Mitbegründerin des renommierten Kunstmagazins "Parkett", dessen Chefredakteurin sie nach wie vor ist. Seit 2004 ist sie Herausgeberin des von der Tate Gallery in London veröffentlichten Magazins Tate etc.

Die zentrale internationale Ausstellung "ILLUMInazioni – ILLUMInations" wird von 88 nationalen Präsentationen begleitet, was die bislang höchste Zahl bei einer Kunstbiennale ist (im Jahr 2009 waren es 77). Sie sind in den angestammten Pavillons in den Giardini, im Arsenale und an anderen Orten der Stadt zu sehen. Über 40 parallele Veranstaltungen und Ausstellungen werden von internationalen Organisationen und Institutionen ausgerichtet.
