The American University of Sharjah was founded 1997 by His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Member of the UAE Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah, as an institution where young women and men study together. The "American" in its name merely refers to the American educational model practiced here.
The university is composed of four faculties, which include the College of Architecture, Art, and Design. With world-class facilities and a dynamic and highly qualified faculty, its reputation has spread far beyond the shores of the UAE.
The College of Architecture, Art and Design (CAAD) offers five undergraduate programs - architecture, interior design, visual communication, multimedia design and design management - and a graduate program in urban planning.
The curriculum in all programs is based on the North American model, which integrates liberal studies with professional education. All the undergraduate students begin their first-year studies in the college's highly effective foundations program. In the upper years, design studios form the core of the undergraduate programs.
The college is dedicated to hands-on technical skills and competence in digital and other advanced media, to the pursuit of aesthetic investigations, and to fostering a regional and cultural awareness and the responsibility for creating humane environments.
The students are prepared for careers in these fields:
- architecture, interior design, town planning
- graphic design, advertising, packaging design, illustration, animation, multimedia applications, computer simulations, video
- heritage and culture management, exhibition design and publicity, general design consulting
